Not worth the moneyThis book arrived in fair condition. The corners were bent in from being thrown around by the transporters. More bubble wrap might be a consideration for future books. Otherwise, the book is wonderful! Thank you!!I've loved every America's Test Kitchen cookbook I've purchased. However, this is the first one that I've gotten that was labeled as new, but definitely used when I paged through the book. Disappointed in the condition, as I paid full price for the book, and would have appreciated a truly 'new' book for a new book price. (I don't mind purchasing used books, but I feel rather cheated when it's mislabeled.)Regarding the book itself - ATK cookbooks are the gold standard of cookbooks in my opinion. They have everything you would expect plus a lot of helpful tips and things that will make nearly any cook better. Trying to get healthier with my husband, but still plan on cooking meals for the kids & us, so need something that everyone will eat. Haven't tried any yet, but I don't expect to be disappointed in the content. I own the Family Cookbook, the baking book, and a few of the Cooking for Two books.NOTE: the version of the book being reviewed was not a final copy. Pictures were in black and white, and will be in color whent he book is released in October 2010."Move over Betty Crocker" is what my husband said just from looking at the recipes. That had me intrigued as he is a die-hard Betty Crocker Cookbook fan.I knew I liked the book when in the foreword I read that they tried with all recipes to improve the healthy quality without sacrificing good taste, and retaining a decent size portion. A variety of techniques are used to minimize fat, salt and calories. One example is using breadcrumbs and milk as a replacement for heavy cream in Creamy Tomato Soup. The cookbook has a ton of recipes interspersed with preparation techniques; for example, rolling out pizza dough, cutting a crown of broccoli, coring fruits such as pears and apples, and zesting. Also spread throughout are the results of kitchen appliance testing and food taste testing done on the show. They typically list the top result and occasionally what they refer to as the best buy which is a budget friendly and good functional version of the appliance winner if it is expensive. These are informative and great for when considering what food processor or even set of measuring spoons to buy.Onto the recipes! I've had the book for 2 days and have made 5 recipes: chicken and zucchini in foil, whole wheat pizza dough, no-cook pizza sauce, classic cheese pizza, and broccoli cheddar soup. The chicken in foil was good. The chicken wasn't cooked in the 25 minute cooking time, but that could be my oven. It needed an extra 7 minutes to hit the recommended temperature. The rest was FABULOUS. The Classic Cheese pizza uses the no-cook sauce and whole wheat dough and part skim mozzarella. It turned out beautifully and the kids ate the whole 14 inch pizza in one sitting. I've never seen them do that with whole wheat pizza crust. The low fat broccoli cheddar was divine. It was creamy, seasoned just enough, and very filling. I can't wait to try out more! The one thing I did wish I had in the book was color photos, SO I purchased the version that will have them when released in October.I love cookbooks, I usually use them mostly for inspiration, and tweak the written recipes according to my tastes and needs, but so far I have followed each and every recipe from this book exactly and have been THRILLED with the results! I've used it to make better versions of dishes I am already familiar with (like chicken parmesan) and to branch out into heretofore unexplored territory (pork and edemame stir fry, lo mein, and chicken enchiladas). So far each and every dish has been very tasty! The only thing that I wish was different about the book is that full recipes appear all on the same page. Many of the recipes are split between pages in such a way that you have to turn the page in the middle of cooking, which can be a little stressful if your hands are covered in gunk and you have a fast cooking dish going. Still, I feel like the quality of the recipes far outweigh the inconvenience of the split recipe layout. This is definitely the cookbook I would recommend to anyone who wants tasty food that has been made over in healthier ways whenever possible without destroying the flavor of the dishes. That being said, I would not say this is a "healthy" cookbook necessarily, but there are nutritional facts for each recipe, so at least you know what you are getting into. I feel this book is a great compromise for someone like me who is trying to suit the tastes of a typical Midwestern man (my husband is all about his meat and potatoes) while still trying to be more adventurous and incorporating fresher and healthier ingredients. This is also a wonderful book for new cooks as the recipes are all so written and explained that they are virtually fool-proof even for a novice.it is a great book but 3 negatives (in my opinion)1. not much pictures of the final dish.2. No explanation about the dish (i am not american so i dont really know all the names).3. Not a quick cookbook , most of the dishes require a good time of preparation (and sometimes alot of dishes along!)its great but for people that has time for supermarket daily and to prepare. not for working moms :)Really good book with clear and great recipes. I wouldn't say it's for dieters but it means you eat healthier food - just what i was after! So my husband and I love love love America's test kitchen, but I thought this missed the mark. The reason I say this is because it has become generally accepted (unless you are the American government) that sugar is related to health issues and obesity, more so than fat. These recipes are low fat but high sugar. America's test kitchen makes super tasty recipes and provides valuable research into methods and products for cooking and baking.I was hoping for a healthy version of their standard family cookbook which this claims to be.So if you are looking for super tasty low fat (only) recipes - this is awesome..but if you were looking for tasty healthy low sugar recipes, this is not the book. This book is full of interesting recipes, unfortunately many of them are quite high calorie.I ordered the 3 family cookbooks and this one is my favourite. A lots of healthy recipes. I made the Vitamin C smoothie this morning and it was to die for!
