I love this story, and how well Janet Wallach tells it. I understand it wasn't easy as Hetty left no diaries, journals, or personal letters. Still, the author managed to piece so much of the personal story behind the public facade together from the extensive research she did. Especially interesting to me is the way she described what was going on in the economy as well as the societal changes, the culture, the political background over the course of decades. As an investor, loved reading about all the many financial booms and busts during this time; so many parallels between those times and ours. History does repeat itself, as she illustrates so well. I feel like I almost know the somewhat eccentric Hetty, although I think she wasn't an easy person to know. This is an immensely readable, well researched book. Will read Janet Wallach's other biography and hope for more in the future.
